Can you guess the line that a jury of 1,500 film artists, critics, and historians selected as the most memorable line in cinematic history?
Here’s a hint…
It was said by this man:
Did you guess it?
The movie is Gone With the Wind.
And the line is: “Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn.”
With this one line Rhett Butler closes the door on his relationship with Scarlett O’Hara.
Is there anything we can learn by taking a page from Rhett’s book?
When it comes to finding our purpose, you betya! …
Do you struggle to know what you want to be when you grow up?
I did … for a very long time…
… I didn’t figure it out what I wanted to do with my life until the age of 48.
What took me so long?
Well before I tell you, let me say this …
Not knowing what we want to do is super widespread in our culture.
Many people come to the Unleash Your Genius workshop for the purpose of finding purpose…
And it turns out there is a very good reason for this.
Here’s a hint:
Closing doors is not something our patterns do well.
We like to keep our options open and the more options we have the harder it is to close a door.
Today we live in a world in which we are told we can be anything.
We live in a world where we are not limited to the career choices our parents made, where we can choose any major in University and in College, where we are encouraged to explore our interests and find ourselves…
And this is really great…
… especially if you are someone who has lots of interests and love to learn.
Yet at the same time it also makes it super hard to find purpose...
Even after a project has gone stale, we still question, “How can I close that door?” … anxiety mounts as we worry if we let it go we may have closed the door on something meaningful.
And so, we end up running around like the White Rabbit in Alice In Wonderland, “I’m late, I’m late”, knowing that time is running out but unable to define what it is we are late for.
Take Jane for example…
Jane had done a slew of different careers and taken tons of learning… all of which she loved, but none of which called to her.
Until she learned how to close doors… that is.
As soon as she did that, however, she took off!
In her words:
“At the age of 59 I am starting a whole new venture as a style consultant. In my first month in business I ran five workshops and I exceeded my sales targets. Before Unleash Your Genius, I would not have been open about my age, but after taking this program I changed the whole focus of my business towards it. This is who I am – and I am proud of it. It feels good to start something at the age of 60 – I am really impressing myself with how much I am getting done. I’m ahead of the game, well ahead of my colleagues, and my strategy is clear and focused. I have a queue of people waiting for me to schedule my next workshop. I am unstoppable and it’s all thanks to letting go of unwanted patterns. ~ Jane Lewis.
